At Cans For Candy, we believe in making holidays sweeter by giving back to those in need. We invite everyone to participate in creating a fun and charitable tradition for your household and your family by setting up a canned food drive in your neighborhood. Our family started this tradition over a decade ago when we first requested two canned food bins for our first Halloween collection from our local food pantry: we received two massive barrels, wondering if we’d ever fill them. But we did! Since then, we have enjoyed the neighborly camaraderie that occurs when people stop by to donate and say Hello.
The idea was to make a greater contribution during the time when food banks become busy - the holiday season. Since we all exchange candy on Halloween, the next logical step is to entice neighbors to drop off canned foods in exchange for Halloween candy. It’s a welcome way to ask your neighbors to clear out their pantry of canned goods that are welcome at the local food bank.
The concept is simple: after checking with your local pantry or food bank, you announce a food drive in your neighborhood and provide a collection station for a specified time frame. You can distribute flyers to people in mailboxes and on doorsteps. It’s a fun way to get out and walk. The materials that our website provides can easily assist you in your food drive.
Fill out our quick query and link to our library and instructions for a fun, easy, simple, cost-effective food drive. We have everything you need right here. All you need is a bit of time and less than $50 - $100 in materials, all of which you can obtain via donations or pooled resources.
Find food banks and institutions in your area, or search and ask around for even more local beneficiary institutions in your neighborood. Go to google maps in your community and do a term search: you will be surprised how quickly you may find smaller food banks or non-profits in need.
The templates can be used right away. Simply choose one of the campaigns, fill in your beneficiary institution (who is receiving the canned goods) and the dates and the collection point, and you are all set!
While some people will create a collection point at their place of residence in their neighborhood, others might use their local non-profit, church, school, or other institution: make the event as managable or as big and bold as you want to. It's also not limited to Halloween: there are several different holiday and generic flyers available for you, so you can create food drives year round!
The beauty is in the simplicity of the Cans For Candy concept: by distributing a combination of flyers and donation bags, you eliminate the need for major donation drums or bins, and are able to deliver the goods upon conclusion of the food drive directly to the beneficiaries, and document & celebrate your success!
Create your own, permanent Cans For Candy's food drive with the help of a few friends or neighbors: make it a seasonal or annual event for your local scout troop, church group, school, or local pantry.
